The Importance of Registering your Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier with the AKC

SCWTCA encourages you to support the AKC and register your Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier with them. If you did not receive your AKC papers contact us at board@scwtca.org for assistance if you think your dog is eligible.

Why is it important you ask?

Registering a dog with the AKC provides an official pedigree, proof of purebred status, access to competitive events, genetic health testing, microchip enrollment, pet insurance and overall supporting responsible dog ownership.

Our breed's registration statistics have decreased every year for the last 10 years and recently became a Low Entry Breed. There are many advantages to supporting AKC registration. Read the article from the AKC here.

While it opens the door to the world of AKC events to your puppy - Obedience, Rally, FastCat, Scent work, TrickDog and Therapy Dog are some of the AKC events that your dog can participate in, AKC registration is not just about your dog, its about supporting all dogs and their people.

  • AKC registration supports kennel inspections, and helps support  the AKC Humane Fund which helps victims of domestic violence seek shelter with their pets, AKC Pet Disaster Relief which donates disaster relief trailers to help dogs (and other animals) affected by disaster, and the AKC Health Foundation which supports veterinary research.   through the AKC Health Foundation and the AKC Library and Museum of the Dog
  • AKC Pet Disaster Relief has donated 119 mobile trailers (with 6 more in the works) filled with non-perishable pet sheltering supplies to local emergency management teams.  These trailers store and deliver essential supplies to designated emergency pet sheltering locations to help pets after natural disasters.
  • The AKC Humane Fund gives grants to shelters that house victims of domestic abuse with their pets.  It also assists groups that protect pets, including those involved in pet welfare, rescue, and health.  The rescue grant program provides financial assistance to not-for-profit groups that are taking on significant rescue-related expenses.
  • The AKC Humane Fund provides scholarships to students pursuing studies in veterinary medicine, physical therapy, animal care, and animal behavior.
  • The AKC has a dedicated team of field agents who visit kennels to help breeders while ensuring the proper care and conditions of AKC-registered dogs and verify that breeders are maintaining accurate records for their dogs. Since 2000, AKC field agents have conducted over 70,000 inspections nationwide.
  • The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is dedicated to advancing the health of all dogs and their owners by funding scientific research and supporting the dissemination of health information to prevent, treat and cure canine disease.  Since 1995 the CHF has provided over $52 million in support for scientific research and educational programs to advance the health of all dogs and their people.
