About Wheatens

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was bred as an all-purpose farm dog and family companion in his native Ireland. Sharing a common ancestry with the Irish Terrier and the Kerry Blue, the Wheaten is distinguished by his soft, silky coat and merry disposition. The mature Wheaten should exhibit a gently waving jacket with color varying from pale beige to shimmering gold.

Temperament: Wheaten is bright, active and charming. They are empathetic to their owners moods and work hard to please them.  Many Wheatens retain their puppy exuberance through its life.  Eminently adaptable, they  enjoy life in the city or the country, just so long as he is close to his people and receives ample daily exercise.  The Wheaten is not a dog relegated to the backyard.

Family Dog: The Wheaten is an excellent family pet. Wheatens do well with children and people with special needs.   For this reason the Wheaten Terrier makes an excellent therapy dog.  It must be part of the family to reach its full potential.

Non-Shedding Dog/Hypo Allergenic: The Wheaten is a non-shedding dog. This means instead of vacuuming dog hair you will be brushing and combing it or paying to have it done. Dogs are not truly hypo-allergenic but the Wheaten has been labeled as such. Many owners have stated that they have less allergic reaction to a Wheaten Terrier. A good breeder will allow you to visit the dogs to see how you or your family member does with the breed. Make sure you visit a puppy and adult dog.
