Calling All Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Breeders!
Sponsored by the SCWTCA Endowment Inc
The SCWTCA Endowment, Inc. announces the Breeders' Challenge to benefit improved health among Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers.
The health of our Wheatens is of paramount importance to us all. Health Research is the key to a long and healthy life for
our beloved show dogs and companions.
Our efforts target two worthy research projects, the Canine Phenome Project and the Siblings Pairs Study.
(Both projects are under the care of Dr. Gary Johnson at the University of Missouri, Columbia.)
- The goal of the Canine Phenome Project is to assemble a resource consisting of DNA samples from a wide variety of dogs with well characterized phenotypes and have it ready when the technology is ready. This will establish a DNA bank with supporting data for researchers to identify genes responsible for canine diseases and is now open to all Wheatens.
- The goal of Wheaten Siblings Pairs Study is to locate genes involved with PLE & PLN.
Who will take up the Challenge?
We invite and encourage all SCWTCA member breeders to contact the owners of Wheatens bred by them. We need as many as are able
to contribute to this worthy cause. The SCWTCA Endowment is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Therefore, all donations are
tax-deductible. A decal of a running Wheaten will be sent to donors that contribute $25.00 or more to the Challenge.
The SCWTCA Endowment has provided a template form letter that breeders can personalize. It features a tear off contribution sheet that will include: the breeder's name, a list of specific projects, including a general fund, and a list of available incentives.
- DOWNLOAD template as a Microsoft Word document.
How can donations be made?
Donations can be submitted as individual checks or in batches of checks. Donations will count towards the breeder's total only if the breeder's name and Breeders' Challenge notation accompany the checks.
- Make all checks payable to SCWTCA Endowment in US funds only.
- Make notation on check indicating Breeders' Challenge and the name of your breeder.
- Mail checks to:

When should we begin? Now!
The Challenge will run until December 31, 2008. The winner will be the breeder whose owners donate the combined largest amount of money. Breeders' own donations do not count towards the winning amount.
The winner of the first Breeders' Challenge will be notified in January 2009 and an award will be presented at the SCWTCA 2009 Annual Meeting. The first year's award will be a head study painting of the breeder's dog of choice created and donated by Darci Olson.

Dear Puppy Owner,
As owners of (my/our) a (kennel name) Wheaten, we have some exciting news. You can help (me/us) win a hand-painted portrait of (my/our) favorite dog. Please join (me/us) and take part in a very unique and worthwhile fundraising event sponsored by the SCWTCA Endowment, Inc.
When (I/we) placed a Wheaten with (you/your family), (I/we) shared information about the inherited diseases that occur in our breed, primarily PLE and PLN. With the recent DNA mapping of the dog, Wheaten owners, breeders and friends have the opportunity to invest in two worthy research projects. (I'm/we) are requesting your help, as part of our Wheaten family to help eliminate these dreadful diseases. Your contribution can and will make a difference to Wheaten everywhere.
To assist with research funding, the Endowment has issued a challenge to all SCWTCA member breeders. We are competing to raise the most money donated by our Wheaten owners. The Challenge will run through 2008. Your tax deductible donation/gift will be dedicated to the health research of Wheatens. Please join (my/our) other SCWT owners to support a brighter Wheaten future with your generous donation/gift. With every $25.00 donation, receive a decal of a running Wheaten. Display them proudly and become part of the history making research we have available to us.
